Hedningholmen

Hedningholmen is located in the heart of Egersund. During the summer, the church is open to tourists.

I do not know for sure, but I believe one of the first churches in Norway was built on Hedningholmen. In 2023, the current church celebrated its 400th anniversary, but there has certainly been a church here long before that. It was common to build new churches on old heathen temples. Much suggests that this is also the history of Hedningholmen. It is likely that all the great Viking kings moored their ships at Hedningholmen. They did not need to anchor in the harbor because Egersund does not experience tides. Read more about Hedningholmen and Egersund Church here.
